A New Spin on Beer Club

Hosting Beer Club at the Buffalo Wing Factory

Hosting Beer Club at the Buffalo Wing Factory

Friday I got to do one of the great things in life — teach people about beer. I hosted this month’s Beer Club at the Buffalo Wing Factory in Chantilly for the second time.

Beer Club typically consists of 5 4oz samples (usually refilled once) each paired with a course. After the dinner you get to select a full beer of your choice. This time I wanted to shake things up a bit and make it into a game.

The restaurant gave me 15 beers to choose from to make the dinner. Then I thought, why 5? Why not 15? That’s when it hit me — blind taste test. Let’s test everyone and see if they can guess what they’re drinking! Continue reading

Preview: Sierra Nevada Beer Club

What: Sierra Nevada Beer Club

When: Friday August 16th 7:00-9:00pm

Where: Chantilly Buffalo Wing Factory — 13067 Lee Jackson Memorial Hwy Fairfax, VA 22030

Cost: $25

Each month the Buffalo Wing Factory hosts a beer club where a brewery representative demos fives beers each paired with a small plate (I actually got to host one during a month when the rep bailed!). Previous beer clubs have had breweries such as New Belgium, Lost Rhino and Victory. August’s beer club is with Sierra Nevada. Of course you’ve had their famous Pale Ale with the green label and maybe even their Torpedo Extra IPA with all it’s hoppy goodness. But have you tried their Kellerweis, Hoptimum or Porter?

Those are the beers being sampled. The menu is still being developed but here’s the nuts and bolts of the night from someone who’s been to quite a few of these:

  • $25+tax+tip
  • Each sample is about 5oz and most of the time (okay, almost every time) you get a chance at a second helping
  • Every beer is paired with a small plate – usually an appetizer, salad, two small entrées and dessert
  • After the five courses you have a choice of one full-size beer of any of the ones sampled

If you do some math, you get five 10oz samples and another 12oz bottle (that’s 62oz!!) AND dinner for $25 and some change. On top of that, you get to hear professional representation from the brewery on their beers. You don’t have to be a beer geek to have fun so bring the spouse or friends.

If you’re interested, contact me and I can put you on the list. There is very minimal space – around 16 seats and it’s already filling up.
