TWIB – Father-in-laws, Cognac and Lawnmower IPAs

This Week in Beer (TWIB) is a feature where I’ll highlight some craft beers I had during this past week mixed with some related (and unrelated) thoughts. Yes, it’s a play on the name of the show This Week in Baseball which I grew up on and loved.

Oh, the Fourth of July. One of my favorite holidays. A day of cookouts, drinking outdoors and fireworks. I was able to do all three while teaching my father-in-law about craft beer.

Hardywood does it again

My father-in-law is not into beer. He’ll drink a Heineken or Miller Lite every once in a while. He hasn’t been exposed to much of the craft beer world. I blew his mind with Hardywood’s Bourbon Cru.

April Dirty Thirty Day 25 – Sixpoint Bengali Tiger

Soooo I’ve been bad. I broke the post streak and I won’t lie to you, I missed a day of not trying a new beer. I could make excuses and I should (since I actually have an awesome excuse for once) but I won’t. I will just pick up where I left off.

Tonight’s April Dirty Thirty beer is…

Sixpoint Bengali Tiger

Sixpoint Bengali Tiger

Sixpoint Bengali Tiger Ale

Critical Information:

  • 6.4% ABV
  • 62 IBUs
  • 13 SRM

My Experience:

– POUR

Poured from can into pint glass. It has an orange color and is mostly transparent. It has a large, puffy white head that clings to the glass.

– SMELL

It has an aroma of fresh hops and is citrus-y.

– TASTE

It’s bitter, then hoppy, then bitter again. It’s straw-like (is that something??) and has a hint of grapefruit.

– FOOD PAIRING

Gouda cheese or Peruvian chicken. Fried yuca anyone?

April Dirty Thirty Day 9 – DC Brau and Union Craft Brewing Yonder Cities

Yesterday was a whirlwind where I unexpected ended up at Mad Fox Brewing Company for a semi-private tour with the owner and the G.R.I.S.T. homebrewing club. Needless to say, getting this review up was not at the top of list of things to do after being out of the house for almost 20 hours. My previous review schedule is now going to shift but it was well worth it. So yesterday’s April Dirty Thirty review was on…

DC Brau and Union Craft Brewing Yonder Cities

DC Brau and Union Craft Brewing Yonder Cities

DC Brau and Union Craft Brewing Yonder Cities Farmhouse IPA

Critical Information:

  • 6.7% ABV
  • Limited Release

My Experience:

– POUR

It was poured off tap at Rustico into a tulip glass. It has an opaque yellow color with limited carbonation and a white foam head.

– SMELL

It gave off an aroma of bananas, cloves and spices mixed with an explosion of hops.

– TASTE

In a word, wonderful. It was hoppy but not over-powerful. It has a rich, spice kick to it. The bananas eventually work their way in. It has a good, light weight to it. The flavors stick around and you don’t want them to go away.

– FOOD PAIRING

So far each beer I’ve had in this project I’ve drank alone with no pairing — either in the afternoon before dinner or late in the evening well past dinner. Last night I didn’t want to starve so I ordered a basket of thick cut fries with truffled Parmesan. Not a bad combo. I was going to take a picture but when I thought about it I realized most of the basket was gone and you would have just seen an empty, metal tin.

– OVERALL THOUGHTS

Yonder Cities is dangerous. It’s dangerous because I could easily down quite a few of them and at 6.7% ABV this is not a session beer. Being off tap probably helps but I still really enjoyed this beer.

Score: 8/10

Congratulations for being a part of the April Dirty Thirty project. Keep the tweets and comments coming, you’re doing fantastic! Remember to use #AprilDirty30. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this beer, what you had tonight, what you’ve tried recently, anything.

One new beer a night for a month. Review it. Share it. Expand your beer knowledge.

April Dirty Thirty Day 4 – Yards Brewing IPA

Today’s April Dirty Thirty review is on…

Yards Brewing IPA

Yards Brewing IPA

Yards Brewing IPA

Critical Information:

  • 7% ABV
  • Available Year-round

My Experience:

– POUR

Poured from bottle into tulip glass (again, can someone confirm that’s what it is from the picture? I’m terrible with my glass types). Good ¾”-1” white head. There were lots of bubbles lasting for several minutes served at 55 or so degrees.

– SMELL

It has a hoppy, floral aroma. I even get some citrus and apples mixed in. First hoppy beer I’ve had in a while so my nostrils are curious.

– TASTE

Light at first sip and then it attacks the palate with a crisp apple-hop flavor. It has a spiciness that lingers for some time before eventually dissipating.

– MOUTHFEEL

It has a light, dense texture and leaves your month with a tingling coating like after drinking dry white wine.

– FOOD PAIRING

911 Buffalo Bites from the Buffalo Wing Factory. The spiciness of the food will be complimented by the hoppiness of the beer.

– OVERALL THOUGHTS

Good beer. This IPA wasn’t overpowering as some IPAs can be.  I enjoyed the crisp, rich flavors. I’m a tough grader but the score below doesn’t mean I wouldn’t get it again.

Score: 5/10

Glad you’ve stuck with me this far into the April Dirty Thirty project. Keep the tweets and comments up guys, you’re doing outstanding! Remember to use #AprilDirty30.
